Attention: Please do not pierce your ears with a gun

First thing’s first

There are two ways to get your ear pierced: through a piercing gun or a needle. The first method is usually offered at jewelry stores or mall kiosks at low cost, while the second is available at professional tattoo shops at a much higher price.

While getting your ears pierced with a gun may seem quicker and cheaper, it’s not safe.

*Spoiler: There is a place where you can safely get pierced without using a gun in Puerto Vallarta.*

Below we list the potential dangers that you can find from the use of a gun:

1. Causes significant tissue damage

When you get your ear pierced with a gun, the bolt loads inside the device and pierces your lobe with blunt force. According to Kenneth Abad, a professional tattoo artist and body piercer, the earring itself is pointy but not sharp enough to safely and effectively pierce flesh. This practice can cause headline damage, scarring, and other unnecessary trauma.

2. It is very difficult to sterilize

“Most piercing guns cannot be sterilized in a special machine because they have plastic components that melt in the process. Alcohol is not enough to properly sterilize the punch. Bacteria and diseases can be easily transferred from one person to another through separate procedures.

3. Your cartilage can break down

Quick drilling services are often offered in shopping malls where it is done for a small fee. However, other places even offer cartilage piercings, which is much more dangerous because the area is harder and more curved than the lobes. The procedure could literally cause your cartilage to break down in a way you don’t want.

4. The piercer could be inexperienced

According to Kenneth, piercing guns were invented for general use and not for professional body piercing. An experienced piercer will never use a gun, therefore most establishments that offer gun service have inexperienced piercers who do not have adequate training on how to do it properly and safely.

6. Your piercing won’t heal properly

The gun will pinch the jewelry into place, which may seem safe, but it won’t allow your new piercing to breathe and heal properly. “The type of bolts designed for piercing guns are generally one size, which is mostly too small for the initial piercing,” Kenneth said. This will cause swelling, rejection, infections, and other problems.
